Nasir al-Din al-Tusi
Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hasan Nasir al-Din al-Tusi (18 February 1201 - 26 June 1274) was a Persian polymath who worked in mathematics, astronomy, philosophy, theology, and medicine. He is regarded as one of the most significant scientific figures of the medieval Islamic world. Al-Tusi served as a scholar under the Ismaili ruler of Alamut, later entered the service of the Mongol conqueror Hulagu Khan, and oversaw the construction and operation of the Maragha Observatory in present-day northwestern Iran - the most advanced astronomical institution of the 13th century. His theoretical work on planetary models, and in particular his invention of the Tusi couple, constituted a significant critique of and departure from the Ptolemaic system and influenced later developments in heliocentric astronomy.
Al-Tusi produced original contributions across a wide range of disciplines. In mathematics, he wrote the first systematic treatment of trigonometry as a discipline independent of astronomy. In astronomy, he refined planetary parameters, organized large-scale observational programs at Maragha, and produced the Zij-i Ilkhani, a set of astronomical tables that remained in use for centuries. In philosophy and theology, he wrote extensively in both the Ismaili and Twelver Shi'a traditions, including the Nasirean Ethics, a widely read Persian work on practical philosophy. Al-Tusi's institutional role at Maragha helped gather and train a generation of astronomers - among them Qutb al-Din al-Shirazi - who continued and extended his theoretical program; this tradition is referred to collectively as the Maragha school.
The most discussed of al-Tusi's astronomical contributions is the Tusi couple: a geometric device in which a smaller circle rolls inside a larger circle of twice its diameter, such that a point on the circumference of the smaller circle traces a straight line. Al-Tusi used this device to generate linear oscillation from combinations of uniform circular motions, enabling him to replace the equant - Ptolemy's geometrically irregular device for producing non-uniform apparent motion - with a construction that preserved the classical principle of uniform circular motion. His revised planetary models were set out in the Tadhkira fi Ilm al-Hay'a (Memoir on the Science of Astronomy). The mathematical structures al-Tusi developed were applied and extended by later astronomers of the Maragha school, most notably Ibn al-Shatir in Damascus (c. 1304-1375), whose lunar and Mercury models closely parallel those later used by Nicolaus Copernicus. Whether Copernicus encountered these Islamic models through direct transmission or arrived at equivalent solutions independently has not been established. Consensus Status
There is broad scholarly consensus that al-Tusi made original and consequential contributions to mathematics and theoretical astronomy, and that the Tusi couple is a genuine mathematical innovation with a documented record in his work.
