Maragha Observatory
The Maragha Observatory was an astronomical research center constructed near Maragheh, Iran (1259 CE) under the patronage of the Mongol Ilkhanate. Founded by the polymath Nasir al-Din al-Tusi following the Mongol victory over the Abbasid Caliphate, it became the principal institution of the Maragha School of astronomy. The observatory was designed to rival earlier Islamic centers like the House of Wisdom in Baghdad and was equipped with advanced instruments for celestial observation, including large brass astrolabes and armillary spheres. Its location at 37.4°N latitude provided optimal conditions for studying the motions of the planets visible in the night sky.
The observatory operated as a hub of astronomical research for approximately two decades before its destruction in the 1270s due to political instability within the Ilkhanate. No physical remains of the Maragha Observatory survive today; archaeological surveys have identified only limited foundations. The site was abandoned after the observatory's destruction during conflicts between Mongol factions in the late 13th century.
