Tychonic System - Modern Geocentrism Viewpoint
Modern geocentrists hold that the Tychonic system - or a close variant of it - correctly describes the structure of the universe, with the Earth stationary at or near the center and the Sun, Moon, and planets orbiting around it while the remaining planets orbit the Sun. Advocates of this position argue that it is not merely a historical curiosity but a scientifically defensible and, for many proponents, theologically necessary cosmological model. The viewpoint is held primarily within traditionalist Catholic and some Protestant communities, though a minority of proponents ground their case in purely empirical and relativistic arguments.

Empirical and Relativistic Arguments
Modern geocentrists frequently invoke the principle of relativity to argue that no experiment can decisively distinguish a geocentric from a heliocentric frame of reference. They contend that under a strict Machian or Einsteinian reading of general relativity, all reference frames are equally valid, and the choice of the Sun or Earth as the center of the coordinate system is a matter of convention rather than physical fact. Robert Sungenis, a leading contemporary advocate, argues that the Michelson-Morley experiment and subsequent interferometry results are consistent with a stationary Earth, and that mainstream physics has suppressed or misinterpreted data that supports geocentrism.
Proponents point to the Michelson-Gale-Pearson experiment (1925) as evidence for a rotating universe around a fixed Earth rather than a rotating Earth within a stationary universe, arguing that the observed fringe shifts are equally explained by either interpretation and that the geocentric reading has been unfairly dismissed.
Geocentrists also frequently cite the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) alignments - sometimes called the “Axis of Evil” in cosmological literature - as evidence that large-scale cosmic structure is aligned with the Earth's ecliptic and equinoxes in a way that is anomalous under the Copernican Principle but expected under geocentrism. They argue that the standard cosmological consensus requires the Earth to occupy no special position, and that these alignments falsify that assumption.
The Tychonic Model Specifically
Among geocentrists, the Tychonic system - in which the Earth is fixed, the Sun and Moon orbit the Earth, and the remaining planets orbit the Sun - is preferred over Ptolemaic geocentrism because it is mathematically equivalent to the Copernican heliocentric model for all observed planetary positions and is therefore immune to the objection that it fails predictively. Proponents argue that Tycho Brahe's model was set aside not because of observational failure but because of the philosophical and cultural momentum of the Copernican revolution. Some advocates distinguish between the original Tychonic model and a neo-Tychonic or “geoheliocentric” variant that incorporates modern observational data while retaining Earth's central and stationary position.
Theological and Scriptural Arguments
Many proponents, particularly within traditionalist Catholic circles, argue that the Catholic Church's historical position on geocentrism was not merely a disciplinary or prudential judgment but reflects the plain sense of Scripture and sacred tradition. They cite passages from the Psalms, Joshua, and Ecclesiastes as affirming a stationary Earth and a moving Sun, and argue that the Church's condemnation of Galileo - whatever its procedural defects - was doctrinally sound. Some go further, contending that the First Vatican Council's affirmations of Scripture and tradition bind Catholics to reject heliocentrism.
Protestant geocentrists make similar arguments from biblical inerrancy, contending that the six-day creation narrative and associated cosmological references presuppose a geocentric universe.
History and Development
Tycho Brahe (1546-1601) proposed the original geoheliocentric system in the late sixteenth century as a compromise between Ptolemy and Copernicus, preserving Earth's central position while accounting for the observed motions of the planets around the Sun. His model was mathematically rigorous and based on the most precise naked-eye observational data available before the telescope.
After the consolidation of Newtonian mechanics and later the Copernican model as scientific orthodoxy, explicit geocentrism largely disappeared from scientific discourse, surviving mainly in religious contexts. A modest revival occurred in the late twentieth century, driven in part by theologians and apologists within traditionalist Catholicism who argued that the Church's position had been prematurely abandoned. The publication of Galileo Was Wrong by Robert Sungenis and Robert Bennett beginning in 2006 marked the most systematic modern attempt to reassemble the geocentric case from both scientific and theological sources.
The contemporary movement gained additional visibility through the documentary film The Principle (2014), which featured interviews with prominent cosmologists - some of whom later disputed the framing of their contributions - and argued that CMB anomalies challenge the Copernican Principle.
Notable Proponents
Robert Sungenis - Catholic apologist and theologian, the most prolific contemporary advocate of geocentrism. Author of the multi-volume Galileo Was Wrong and founder of Catholic Apologetics International. Sungenis argues the case on both scriptural-traditional and empirical grounds.
Robert Bennett - Physicist and co-author of Galileo Was Wrong with Sungenis. Bennett provides the technical physics argumentation for the series.
Gerardus Bouw - Astronomer and professor, author of Geocentricity (1992) and founder of the Biblical Astronomer journal. Bouw approaches geocentrism primarily from a Protestant biblical inerrancy standpoint and has developed a detailed technical model.
Rick DeLano - Producer of The Principle (2014), who argues that anomalies in the CMB data constitute genuine empirical challenges to the Copernican Principle.
Tycho Brahe (historical) - The Danish astronomer whose observational work and geoheliocentric model provide the foundational framework that modern advocates adapt and defend.
Internal Debates
Modern geocentrists are not unified on several important questions:
Geocentrism vs. geoheliocentrism - Some advocates hold to a strict Ptolemaic model with epicycles, while the majority favor the Tychonic or neo-Tychonic arrangement. The latter group argues the Tychonic system's mathematical equivalence with heliocentrism is a strength, not a concession.
Rotating vs. non-rotating Earth - Some geocentrists accept that the Earth rotates on its axis (consistent with the Tychonic system) while denying that it orbits the Sun. Others hold to a strictly non-rotating Earth, requiring the entire universe to rotate around a fixed terrestrial axis.
Primacy of scriptural vs. empirical arguments - Sungenis and the Catholic wing emphasize both theological tradition and physical evidence, while Bouw and Protestant advocates tend to root their case more exclusively in biblical authority. This leads to different standards of what would count as a defeater for the position.
Engagement with modern physics - Some advocates attempt to work within the framework of general relativity, arguing that it actually supports geocentrism; others reject contemporary cosmological physics more broadly as philosophically or ideologically compromised.
