Science-Religion Conflict Thesis
The science-religion conflict thesis - also called the warfare thesis or conflict model - is the claim that science and religion are, by their natures, fundamentally and inevitably in opposition, such that the advance of scientific knowledge has historically come at the cost of religious resistance. The thesis is most closely associated with John William Draper's History of the Conflict Between Religion and Science (1874) and Andrew Dickson White's A History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom (1896). Whether the conflict thesis accurately describes the historical relationship between science and religion is itself a subject of active scholarly debate; interpretations range from full acceptance to near-universal rejection among historians of science.
Current State of Debate
Among historians and philosophers of science, the conflict thesis in its strong Draper-White form is widely regarded as an oversimplification. Scholarly work from the latter decades of the twentieth century onward - including contributions from John Hedley Brooke, Ronald Numbers, and David Lindberg - has emphasized that the historical relationship between science and religion has been characterized more often by complexity, mutual support, and entanglement than by systematic warfare. Brooke's Science and Religion: Some Historical Perspectives (1991) is frequently cited as a turning point in establishing this “complexity thesis” as the dominant position within the history of science profession.
At the same time, the conflict thesis retains support outside the academic history of science, particularly among some scientists, public intellectuals, and advocates of secularism, who argue that institutional religion has demonstrably impeded scientific inquiry in numerous historical episodes and continues to do so in contemporary debates over topics such as evolution, cosmology, and bioethics. The debate therefore spans empirical, historiographical, and normative dimensions simultaneously.
The cases most frequently cited in support of the conflict thesis - the Galileo affair, the condemnation of Giordano Bruno, the Roman Inquisition's treatment of natural philosophers, and ecclesiastical responses to Darwinism - are each contested on the terms of the thesis. Historians generally argue that these episodes involved political, personal, and institutional factors that cannot be reduced to a simple science-versus-religion frame. Consensus Status
There is broad consensus among professional historians of science that the strong conflict thesis - the claim that science and religion have been engaged in a continuous, structurally necessary war - is historically inaccurate as a general description. No comparable consensus exists on the normative question of whether science and religion are compatible in principle, or on the sociological question of whether religious belief currently influences scientific practice or policy in ways that are harmful or beneficial.
