Ptolemy
Claudius Ptolemy (c. 100-c. 170 CE) was a Greek-speaking mathematician, astronomer, geographer, and philosopher who worked in Alexandria, Egypt, during the Roman Imperial period. He is best known for the Almagest, a comprehensive mathematical treatment of the motions of the sun, moon, and planets that became the foundational astronomical reference of the medieval Islamic and European worlds. His work also encompassed geography, optics, harmonics, and astrology. The extent to which Ptolemy derived his results independently versus incorporated or adapted the work of earlier figures - particularly Hipparchus of Nicaea - remains a subject of scholarly discussion.
Current State of Knowledge
Ptolemy's major surviving works are the Almagest (Greek: Mathematike Syntaxis), the Tetrabiblos, the Geography, the Harmonics, and the Optics. The Almagest presents a geocentric model of the cosmos in which the Earth occupies the center and the celestial bodies move in combinations of circular motions (deferents and epicycles), with the additional device of the equant point to account for observed irregularities in planetary speed. This model provided predictive accuracy sufficient for navigational and calendrical purposes and remained the dominant framework in mathematical astronomy for roughly fourteen centuries.
Scholars generally regard Ptolemy as a sophisticated synthesizer and extender of earlier Greek astronomical work rather than solely an original discoverer. The degree of his originality - and the degree to which he may have misrepresented borrowed observations as his own - has been debated since at least the eighteenth century and was brought into sharper focus in the twentieth century by the work of Robert Russell Newton and subsequent researchers. Ptolemy's geocentric cosmology was superseded following the Copernican revolution of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, but his mathematical methods, particularly the use of trigonometry and systematic modeling of celestial motions, made lasting contributions to the history of science.
Consensus Status
There is broad, independently-arrived-at agreement among historians of science and classicists that the Almagest represents the culminating achievement of ancient mathematical astronomy and that Ptolemy drew heavily - though not exclusively - on the earlier observational work of Hipparchus. - Ptolemy as systematic synthesizer. - Ptolemy as scientific fraudster. Developed most forcefully by Robert Russell Newton in The Crime of Claudius Ptolemy (1977), this viewpoint argues that Ptolemy fabricated or adjusted observations to fit theoretical conclusions derived from Hipparchus, and should be regarded as a fraud rather than an original scientist.
