Prutenae Tabulae
The Prutenae Tabulae (Prussian Tables) are a set of astronomical tables published in 1551 by Erasmus Reinhold under the patronage of Albert, Duke of Prussia. Compiled using the heliocentric planetary theory of Nicolaus Copernicus as set out in De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (1543), they provided a new computational framework for predicting planetary positions, eclipses, and other celestial phenomena. The tables supplanted the earlier Alphonsine Tables as the working standard for European astronomers and were widely used for calendar reform and navigation into the early seventeenth century.
Background and Significance
Reinhold was a professor of mathematics at the University of Wittenberg and drew heavily on Copernicus's revised parameters and geometric models, though the tables themselves could be applied without commitment to the physical reality of heliocentrism. Users were free to treat the mathematics as a computational convenience rather than a literal description of the solar system - a distinction that made the tables professionally acceptable across confessional and philosophical lines. The tables were a genuine improvement over the Alphonsine Tables, though accumulated errors became apparent by the late sixteenth century, contributing to the impetus for Tycho Brahe's systematic observational program and, eventually, Johannes Kepler's Rudolphine Tables (1627), which incorporated elliptical orbits and replaced the Prutenae Tabulae as the standard reference.
The tables played an indirect role in the Gregorian calendar reform of 1582, as the computational tools they provided informed the assessment of calendar drift that reform was designed to correct.

There is broad historical and astronomical consensus on the basic facts of the tables' authorship, publication date, derivation from Copernican parameters, and their subsequent displacement by the Rudolphine Tables. Interpretive questions - including how the tables influenced the reception of Copernicanism and what role they played in the relationship between mathematical astronomy and physical cosmology - remain subjects of ongoing historiographical discussion.
