The Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems (Italian: Dialogo sopra i due massimi sistemi del mondo) is a work of natural philosophy published by Galileo Galilei in Florence on 22 February 1632. Written in Italian rather than Latin and structured as a conversation among three fictional interlocutors over four days, the work presents arguments bearing on the competing cosmological models of Ptolemy and Copernicus. The book's status as a work of science, a work of rhetoric, a political provocation, or some combination of all three remains a point of interpretive debate among historians of science.

The Dialogue is among the most studied texts in the history of science. Historians broadly agree on its immediate context: Galileo composed it under a license obtained from Church authorities, dedicated it to Ferdinand II de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, and saw it placed on the Index of Forbidden Books later in 1632 following his trial before the Roman Inquisition in 1633. What remains contested is the work's precise scientific contribution. The Dialogue does not contain the mathematical demonstrations Galileo developed elsewhere, such as in the Discourses and Mathematical Demonstrations Relating to Two New Sciences (1638). Historians differ on whether its arguments genuinely advanced the Copernican case on empirical grounds or functioned primarily as a polemical and rhetorical intervention. The role of the tidal argument - Galileo's own preferred proof of heliocentrism, which later proved incorrect - in shaping the work's reception and condemnation continues to attract scholarly attention.
The three interlocutors are Salviati, who argues for the Copernican system; Simplicio, who defends the Ptolemaic and Aristotelian position; and Sagredo, a wealthy layman presented as an intelligent neutral party. The identification of Simplicio with Pope Urban VIII, who had previously supported Galileo and whose arguments Simplicio voices in the final section, is widely credited as a contributing factor in the political collapse of Galileo's standing with the Church, though the precise causal weight of that identification is disputed.
