Constructive Empiricism
Constructive empiricism is a position in the philosophy of science, developed by Bas van Fraassen in his 1980 work The Scientific Image, holding that the aim of science is not truth about the unobservable world but empirical adequacy - that is, producing theories whose claims about observable phenomena are true. On this view, accepting a scientific theory does not commit the scientist to believing its claims about unobservables are true, only that its claims about observable phenomena are correct. Constructive empiricism occupies a middle position between scientific realism, which holds that successful theories are at least approximately true descriptions of both observable and unobservable reality, and stronger forms of instrumentalism, which treat theories as mere calculational tools without truth value. Current State of Debate
Constructive empiricism remains an active position in philosophy of science, debated primarily through three persistent fault lines. First, the observable/unobservable distinction: van Fraassen draws it at what the unaided human senses can detect in principle, not merely in practice, but critics argue this line is arbitrary or unstable given that instruments extend perception continuously rather than categorically. Second, the question of what scientific acceptance commits one to: van Fraassen holds that accepting a theory is an epistemic act distinct from believing it true, but opponents contend this distinction is psychologically or pragmatically incoherent. Third, the explanatory challenge: realists argue that constructive empiricism cannot account for why empirically adequate theories tend to be predictively successful without positing that they track something real about unobservable structure - the so-called “no-miracles argument.” Van Fraassen's response, that the success of science is itself an evolutionary or selection-effect phenomenon requiring no deeper explanation, is accepted by some and rejected by others.
Entity realism, associated with Ian Hacking and Nancy Cartwright, presents a related but distinct position: one may be a realist about entities one can manipulate causally (electrons used to coat a surface) while remaining agnostic about the theoretical structures that describe them. This view intersects with constructive empiricism but diverges on where agnosticism is warranted.

Structural realism: What science correctly describes is the relational or mathematical structure of the world, not the intrinsic nature of unobservable entities.
