Among historians of science and historians of the Catholic Church, broad consensus exists that the popular narrative of the Catholic Church as a systematic opponent of scientific progress is historically inaccurate. This consensus holds that the relationship between the Church and natural inquiry was, for most of its history, far more complex, collaborative, and context-dependent than the “conflict thesis” - the claim that science and religion are inherently at war - would suggest. Within this same scholarly community, consensus also exists that specific episodes of genuine conflict occurred, most notably the Galileo affair, but that these episodes have been substantially misrepresented in popular accounts. Inter-community disagreement persists between this historical scholarship and the broader public and media consensus, which continues to treat the conflict thesis as well-established fact.

Evidence Base

The Conflict Thesis

The conflict thesis, associated primarily with John William Draper's History of the Conflict between Religion and Science (1874) and Andrew Dickson White's A History of the Warfare of Science with Theology in Christendom (1896), shaped popular understanding of Church-science relations for much of the twentieth century. Historians of science have since subjected this thesis to sustained critical scrutiny. The field broadly regards it as a polemical construction rather than a descriptive account of the historical record.1)2)

The historiographical rejection of the conflict thesis is not a theological or apologetic project. It is represented across secular academic institutions, is not dependent on Catholic funding or sponsorship, and has been developed by historians of varied religious backgrounds and none.3)

Institutional Support for Natural Inquiry

Historians have documented that medieval and early modern Church institutions - monasteries, cathedral schools, and universities - were primary sites for the preservation and advancement of natural knowledge in the Latin West. The university system itself, in which natural philosophy was a core curriculum component, was largely a Church creation.4) Religious orders, particularly the Jesuits, maintained observatories and contributed to astronomy, mathematics, and natural history through the early modern period.5)

The Galileo Affair

Historians of science broadly agree on the following regarding the Galileo affair: that Galileo was not prosecuted for heliocentrism per se but within a specific theological, political, and personal context; that his first trial (1616) resulted in an injunction against advocating heliocentrism, not imprisonment; that his 1633 condemnation and house arrest followed the publication of the Dialogo and the perceived breach of his undertaking to Pope Urban VIII; and that the affair was entangled with Vatican court politics, Galileo's personal relationships, and the post-Tridentine anxiety about lay biblical interpretation, in addition to astronomical questions.6)7)

Historians also broadly agree that Galileo was not tortured, that he did not recant a known truth under physical duress in the manner of popular legend, and that the flat-Earth myth - the claim that the Church taught Earth was flat - is without historical foundation.8)

The Church's 1992 statement acknowledging that the condemnation of Galileo was an error is documented fact. Historians note it, but the consensus regarding the episode's complexity predates and is independent of that acknowledgment.

The Flat Earth Myth

Historians of medieval thought and cosmology hold near-universal consensus that the Church did not teach, and educated Europeans did not believe, that Earth was flat. The spherical Earth was standard natural philosophy throughout the medieval period, derived from Aristotle and Ptolemy and uncontested in university curricula. The flat-Earth myth originated in nineteenth-century polemical literature, not the historical record.9)10)

Limits and Open Questions

The historiographical consensus that the conflict thesis is false does not establish that the Church had no negative influence on scientific inquiry. Historians acknowledge that censorship through the Index of Forbidden Books had real effects on the circulation of ideas, that specific researchers faced genuine institutional opposition, and that the post-Tridentine period introduced new constraints on certain kinds of inquiry. The consensus is that these episodes do not aggregate into a pattern of systematic opposition - not that no friction existed.11)

Open questions within the scholarly literature include: the degree to which Jesuit natural philosophy shaped or constrained subsequent scientific development; the precise role of theological vs. political factors in specific condemnations; and whether the complexity thesis itself understates the cumulative chilling effect of censorship regimes even when enforcement was inconsistent.

The consensus is specifically historical. It does not address present-day Church positions on scientific questions such as evolution, cosmology, or biomedical research, which are covered separately.

Dissenting Viewpoints

Some scholars and commentators continue to defend versions of the conflict thesis, arguing that the historiographical consensus understates structural tensions between revealed-truth epistemology and empirical inquiry. Others argue that the rehabilitation of the Church's scientific record has been driven partly by apologetic motivation and has overcorrected. These positions are addressed on their own pages:
