Holders of this viewpoint argue that Aryabhata (476-550 CE), the pioneering Indian mathematician and astronomer, was born in the Asmaka region of ancient India - a territory associated in classical sources with the area of present-day Maharashtra or the Deccan plateau, rather than with the Pataliputra (modern Bihar) school with which he is more commonly associated. Proponents draw primarily on Aryabhata's own statements in the Aryabhatiya and on geographical and linguistic analysis of classical texts.

Aryabhata's Self-Reference in the Aryabhatiya

The principal textual anchor for this viewpoint is a verse in the Aryabhatiya (Gola 49) in which Aryabhata states that he was born in Kusumapura and that the work was composed there, but separately identifies himself with the Asmaka region. Proponents argue that the reference to Asmaka indicates his birthplace or ancestral region, while Kusumapura (identified with Pataliputra) was the place of his education and mature work. On this reading, “born in Asmaka” is not a loose cultural affiliation but a precise geographical claim.

Location of Asmaka

Advocates note that classical sources - including Puranic and Buddhist texts - place Asmaka as one of the sixteen mahajanapadas (great kingdoms) of ancient India, situating it along the Godavari river in what is now Andhra Pradesh or Maharashtra. They contend that this identification is stable across multiple independent ancient sources, making Asmaka a southern rather than a northern region. Aryabhata's birth in such a region would make him a son of the Deccan rather than of the Gangetic plain.

Linguistic and Astronomical Evidence

Some proponents point to astronomical parameters and computational methods in the Aryabhatiya that they argue show familiarity with southern Indian observational traditions. They also note that Aryabhata's astronomical school had its strongest and most direct continuation in Kerala (through the Kerala school of mathematics) and in the south generally, which they take as circumstantial evidence of southern origins.

Distinction Between Birthplace and Place of Work

A recurring argument is that ancient scholars routinely traveled to established centers of learning - Pataliputra being the preeminent such center in the Gupta period - without those centers being their places of birth. Proponents hold that conflating Kusumapura (place of work) with Aryabhata's origin misreads the relevant verse and reflects a bias toward the better-documented northern tradition.

History of the Viewpoint

The question of Aryabhata's birthplace has been contested since at least the medieval period, when commentators disagreed about the precise meaning of the Asmaka reference. The 7th-century commentator Bhaskara I, writing in the southern tradition, interprets Aryabhata as connected to the Asmaka region, a reading that southern scholars have cited as early external corroboration. In the modern period, the debate was sharpened by the work of Kerala-based historians of science who noted the disproportionate influence of Aryabhata's methods on the Kerala school, and by historians in Maharashtra who advanced the claim for a Deccan origin on the basis of the mahajanapada identification of Asmaka. The Kerala Legislative Assembly passed a resolution in 1975 - the 1500th anniversary of Aryabhata's birth - asserting that Aryabhata was born in the region corresponding to present-day Kerala, a claim that a subset of proponents in this broader Asmaka camp support, while others dispute.

Notable Proponents

  • Bhaskara I (7th century CE) - mathematician and astronomer whose commentary on the Aryabhatiya treats Aryabhata's Asmaka connection as geographically meaningful; his work is the earliest surviving external reference to the question.
  • K. V. Sarma (1919-2005) - historian of science at the Vishveshvaranand Vedic Research Institute and later Adyar Library; documented the Kerala school's derivation from Aryabhata and argued for the significance of the southern connection.
  • T. A. Sarasvati Amma (1918-2000) - historian of mathematics whose work on the geometry of the Aryabhatiya emphasized the southern transmission of his methods.

Internal Debates

Proponents of the Asmaka viewpoint disagree among themselves on the precise identification of Asmaka. The principal internal dispute is between:

  • Maharashtra/Deccan identification - holds that Asmaka corresponds to the Nanded or Aurangabad region along the Godavari, placing Aryabhata's birth in what is now Maharashtra.
  • Andhra identification - holds that Asmaka lay further east into the Godavari delta region, placing his origin in present-day Andhra Pradesh.
  • Kerala identification - a minority position within this camp, arguing that “Asmaka” in Aryabhata's usage refers to a more southerly region, or that subsequent migration patterns point to Kerala as the more precise origin.

There is also internal disagreement about the weight to give the Aryabhatiya verse versus the external commentarial tradition, and about whether modern state boundaries and regional identities should play any role in the historical argument.
