They maintain that all motion occurs within a hierarchically ordered cosmos where each element has a natural place-heavenly bodies moving in perfect circles, while terrestrial elements fall toward the center.
Change is explained through the interplay of potentiality and actuality. A substance like wood contains the potential to become ash; when exposed to fire (the efficient cause), this potential is actualized. Teleology-a focus on purposeful outcomes-is fundamental, as seen in Aristotle's assertion that objects move toward their natural place or fulfill intended functions.
Aristotle's rejection of atomism in favor of continuous matter also distinguishes this viewpoint. He argued that the void cannot exist and that change involves qualitative transformations rather than discrete particles. This perspective was preserved and expanded by Islamic philosophers such as Averroes, who synthesized Aristotelian thought with Neoplatonic elements, and medieval scholastics like Thomas Aquinas, who integrated it with Christian theology.
