Aristarchus of Samos

Aristarchus of Samos (c. 310 BC - c. 230 BC) was a Greek astronomer and mathematician of the third century BC, notable for proposing a heliocentric model of the solar system roughly eighteen centuries before Nicolaus Copernicus advanced a similar framework in the sixteenth century. Working in the tradition of Ionian natural philosophy, Aristarchus argued that the Sun, not the Earth, occupied the center of the cosmos, and that the Earth both orbited the Sun and rotated on its own axis. His original heliocentric treatise has not survived; knowledge of its contents derives primarily from a passage in Archimedes' The Sand Reckoner and later references in Plutarch and Sextus Empiricus. His surviving work, On the Sizes and Distances of the Sun and Moon, demonstrates a rigorous geometric method for estimating celestial distances and does not itself advance the heliocentric argument.

Aristarchus worked at a time when geocentrism - the view that the Earth stands motionless at the center of the universe - was the dominant cosmological framework in the Greek-speaking world. His heliocentric proposal attracted little immediate following and was explicitly rejected by most subsequent ancient astronomers, including Hipparchus. The reasons for this rejection are debated among historians of science: some emphasize the absence of observable stellar parallax, which ancient critics noted as a logical consequence of heliocentrism that was not detectable with ancient instruments; others point to philosophical commitments rooted in Aristotelian physics, which held that a moving Earth was physically incoherent. The question of how to characterize Aristarchus's contribution - whether as a genuine scientific hypothesis, a mathematical device, or an inspired speculation - remains a topic of discussion in the history and philosophy of science. His relationship to later heliocentrism, and what continuity if any existed between his proposal and Copernicus's independent development, is similarly contested among historians.

Consensus Status

There is broad scholarly consensus that Aristarchus did advance a heliocentric model in antiquity, based on the ancient sources that reference it.
