Alfred North Whitehead
Alfred North Whitehead (15 February 1861-30 December 1947) was a British mathematician and philosopher whose work spanned formal logic, the philosophy of science, metaphysics, and education. He is best known for co-authoring Principia Mathematica (1910-1913) with Bertrand Russell, an attempt to ground mathematics in logical foundations, and for developing process philosophy, a metaphysical framework that treats reality as constituted by dynamic events and relations rather than static substances. His career divided broadly into a British period focused on mathematics and logic, and an American period at Harvard focused on speculative metaphysics.
Life and Career
Whitehead was born in Ramsgate, Kent, England, and educated at Sherborne School and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he later became a Fellow and lecturer in mathematics. He taught at Cambridge from 1884 to 1910 and at University College London and Imperial College from 1911 to 1924. In 1924 he accepted a position in philosophy at Harvard University, where he remained until his retirement in 1937. His intellectual trajectory moved from technical work in symbolic logic and the foundations of mathematics toward an increasingly ambitious attempt to construct a comprehensive speculative philosophy. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1903 and received the Order of Merit in 1945.

Principia Mathematica
Principia Mathematica remains Whitehead and Russell's most technically influential work. The project aimed to derive all of mathematics from a small set of logical axioms and inference rules, continuing the logicist program initiated by Gottlob Frege. The work introduced and systematized much of the notation still used in modern formal logic. Kurt Gödel's incompleteness theorems (1931) demonstrated inherent limits on the kind of completeness Principia sought, and subsequent developments in set theory and logic have reframed the project's legacy. Process Philosophy
Whitehead's process philosophy, developed most fully in Process and Reality, argues that the fundamental constituents of reality are not enduring material substances but momentary events he called “actual occasions” or “actual entities.” These occasions come into being through a process of “concrescence” - the integration of prior occasions and possibilities - and then perish, becoming data for subsequent occasions. God plays a role in Whitehead's system as a non-coercive principle that makes novelty and order possible. This framework was intended to overcome what Whitehead called “the bifurcation of nature” - the sharp division between the objective physical world and subjective experience that he traced to Descartes and early modern science.
Process philosophy has been taken up in theology (particularly in liberal Protestant and ecumenical theology, in the school known as process theology), in philosophy of religion, and to a lesser extent in philosophy of mind and ecology. Its reception in mainstream analytic philosophy has been limited, partly due to the density and idiosyncratic terminology of Process and Reality.
Philosophy of Education
Whitehead also wrote on education, most accessibly in The Aims of Education (1929). He argued against the passive accumulation of “inert ideas” and in favor of education that connects knowledge to living experience. He emphasized rhythm in learning and the cultivation of imagination alongside technical skill.
Consensus Status
There is broad scholarly consensus on Whitehead's historical importance to formal logic and the foundations of mathematics through Principia Mathematica. His standing as a major figure in 20th-century metaphysics is widely acknowledged, though process philosophy occupies a minority position within contemporary analytic philosophy.
