Alexandre Koyré

Alexandre Koyré (29 April 1892 - 28 April 1964) was a Russian-born French philosopher and historian of science whose work fundamentally reoriented how scholars understand the Scientific Revolution. Born in Taganrog, Russia, Koyré studied under Edmund Husserl and Henri Bergson before settling in France, where he spent most of his academic career. He later held positions at the École Pratique des Hautes Études in Paris and the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Koyré is best known for arguing that the transformation of natural philosophy in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries was driven primarily by changes in metaphysical and mathematical frameworks - not by new instruments, accumulated observations, or practical needs.

Core Thesis

Koyré's central claim was that the Scientific Revolution represented a radical conceptual rupture rather than a gradual accumulation of knowledge. In his landmark work Études Galiléennes (1939), he argued that Galileo's achievement was fundamentally philosophical: a decision to describe the physical world in the language of mathematics, replacing the qualitative, hierarchical cosmos of Aristotelian physics with an infinite, geometrized universe. This shift required, in Koyré's framing, the destruction of the ancient cosmos and the geometrization of space - a move he described as a transformation of human intellect rather than a product of observation or experiment.

His From the Closed World to the Infinite Universe (1957) extended this argument to cosmology, tracing how European thinkers moved from a bounded, ordered cosmos to an infinite, homogeneous universe of matter in motion. Koyré held that this conceptual revolution preceded and conditioned the empirical discoveries associated with it, not the reverse.

Influence and Reception

Koyré's approach became foundational to the historiography of science in the mid-twentieth century, influencing Thomas Kuhn - whose concept of paradigm shifts bears a recognizable resemblance to Koyré's notion of conceptual rupture - as well as I. Bernard Cohen, Alistair Crombie, and others. His insistence that scientific change must be understood in terms of the internal logic of ideas, rather than social or material conditions, made him a central figure in the internalist tradition of history of science.

His interpretation has been contested on several fronts. Historians in the externalist and sociological traditions - including those influenced by Boris Hessen's 1931 materialist account of Newton and, later, the sociology of scientific knowledge (SSK) - argue that Koyré underweighted the role of craft practice, instrumentation, patronage networks, and economic context in producing scientific change. Historians of experiment, particularly those associated with the work of Peter Dear and others, have questioned Koyré's reading of Galileo and challenged the claim that early modern scientists were primarily engaged in Platonic thought experiments rather than empirical investigation. Scholarly Consensus Status

There is broad consensus among historians of science that Koyré made foundational contributions to the field and that his work on Galileo and cosmological transformation remains indispensable starting material. There is no consensus, however, on the adequacy of his internalist, idealist framework.
