Abraham Bar Hiyya
Abraham Bar Hiyya (c. 1065 - c. 1145), also known by his Latin name Savasorda (a transliteration of his Arabic honorific Sahib al-Shurta, meaning “captain of the guard”), was a Jewish mathematician, astronomer, philosopher, and encyclopedist who lived and worked in al-Andalus and the Christian kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula, primarily in Barcelona. He is among the earliest known authors to write scientific and philosophical works in Hebrew, making him a pivotal figure in the transmission of Arabic and Greek learning to medieval European scholarship.
Scope and Significance
Bar Hiyya's output spanned multiple disciplines. His mathematical works include Hibbur ha-Meshihah ve-ha-Tishboret (Treatise on Measurement and Calculation), a practical geometry text that became an important source for European mathematicians - Plato of Tivoli translated it into Latin in 1145 as Liber embadorum. This translation is credited with introducing solutions to quadratic equations into Latin-language scholarship. In astronomy, Bar Hiyya wrote Tzurat ha-Aretz (Form of the Earth), a cosmological treatise describing a geocentric model of the universe consistent with Ptolemaic astronomy and Arabic astronomical tradition. His philosophical-theological work Hegyon ha-Nefesh (Meditation of the Sad Soul) engages questions of sin, repentance, and eschatology. He also wrote Megillat ha-Megalleh (Scroll of the Revealer), an astrological-historical work that attempts to calculate the date of the messianic advent from astronomical and biblical data.
Bar Hiyya is a significant figure in the Jewish engagement with cosmological models, as his astronomical writings reflect the dominant geocentric framework of his era while working within a Jewish intellectual context.

Bar Hiyya worked during a period of intensive cultural exchange between Islamic, Christian, and Jewish intellectual traditions in Iberia. His career straddled the boundary between al-Andalus and the Christian north, and he collaborated with Christian scholars - most notably Plato of Tivoli - in translation projects that fed the Twelfth-Century Renaissance in Europe.
