Quran and Science

The relationship between the Quran and modern science is a subject of ongoing religious, philosophical, and scholarly discussion. At issue is whether verses in the Quran anticipate, align with, contradict, or are simply unrelated to discoveries in fields such as cosmology, embryology, astronomy, geology, and biology. The debate involves questions of textual interpretation, the nature of religious language, the history of Islamic scholarship, and the philosophy of science.

Background

The Quran, the central religious text of Islam, was compiled in its current form in the 7th century CE. It contains passages that have been interpreted by some readers as describing natural phenomena - the origins of the universe, the development of the human embryo, the motion of celestial bodies, and the structure of the earth and sky. Whether such passages constitute scientific claims, metaphorical or theological language, or coincidental resemblance to later scientific findings is a matter of significant dispute.

Interest in reconciling religious texts with natural philosophy has roots in medieval Islamic scholarship. Figures such as Ibn Rushd (Averroes) and Ibn Sina (Avicenna) engaged extensively with Greek natural philosophy within an Islamic intellectual framework. The modern form of the debate - sometimes called “Bucailleism” after French physician Maurice Bucaille, whose 1976 book The Bible, the Quran and Science argued that the Quran contained foreknowledge of modern scientific discoveries - gained wide popular traction in the Muslim world from the late 20th century onward, aided by substantial institutional promotion, including state-backed distribution efforts that embedded the i'jaz al-'ilmi framework in educational and publishing contexts across several Muslim-majority countries.

Current State of Debate

Proponents of Quranic scientific foreknowledge argue that certain verses, read in light of modern science, describe phenomena that could not have been known to a 7th-century author by ordinary means. Commonly cited examples include Quran 21:30 (interpreted as a reference to the Big Bang), Quran 23:12-14 (interpreted as a description of embryonic development), and Quran 36:40 (interpreted as a reference to heliocentric or non-geocentric celestial motion). Advocates argue this constitutes evidence of divine authorship.

Critics - including scientists, historians of science, and Muslim scholars - raise several objections. Some argue that the apparent matches result from reading modern scientific concepts back into ambiguous ancient text, a practice sometimes called “retrofitting” or “eisegesis.” Others note that the Quran also contains passages difficult to reconcile with contemporary science, and that selective citation distorts the overall picture. Historians of science have questioned whether the embryological and astronomical knowledge reflected in the Quran was genuinely novel, or was consistent with the Galenic and Ptolemaic frameworks available in the 7th-century Near East. A related critique holds that framing the Quran as a scientific document misrepresents its literary genre and religious purpose.

Islamic scholars and theologians are not uniformly aligned on either side. Some hold that science and Quranic interpretation are complementary; others maintain that the Quran is a guide to faith and practice, not a scientific text, and that treating it as one risks both bad science and bad theology.

Consensus Status

There is a broad consensus among historians of science and mainstream biologists, cosmologists, and other relevant specialists that the Quran does not constitute a scientifically accurate document in the modern sense, and that claimed foreknowledge passages are best explained by the intellectual context of late antiquity or by interpretive flexibility in translation. This consensus does not bear on theological questions about the Quran's divine origin, which fall outside empirical science's scope.
