Where the //Almagest// provided the mathematical machinery for computing planetary positions, the //Planetary Hypotheses// attempted to translate those mathematical models into a physical description of the cosmos - specifying the actual sizes, distances, and ordering of the celestial bodies within a nested, geocentric framework. The work is significant in the history of astronomy both for its influence on medieval Islamic and European cosmology and for its role in the development of physical, as distinct from merely computational, planetary theory. ===== Scope and Content ===== The //Planetary Hypotheses// survives incompletely. Book I is preserved in Greek, though a portion was missing from the Greek manuscript tradition until the recovery of an Arabic translation clarified the text. Book II survives only in Arabic.
