====== Copernicus ====== Nicolaus Copernicus (28 February 1473 NS [19 February 1473 OS], Thorn, Royal Prussia – 3 June 1543 NS [24 May 1543 OS], Frauenburg, Royal Prussia) was a canon, physician, and mathematician born in Royal Prussia who proposed the first mathematically detailed heliocentric model of the solar system in his major work, //De revolutionibus orbium coelestium// (1543). His model placed the Sun near the center of the cosmos, displaced the Earth to the status of one planet among several, and provided a geometric account of apparent retrograde planetary motion without the use of Ptolemaic equant points. The full mathematical treatment appeared only in //De revolutionibus// in the final year of his life. His model retained circular orbits and the use of epicycles, making it geometrically comparable in complexity to the Ptolemaic system it challenged, and it did not produce dramatically more accurate predictions with the observational tools then available. The revolutionary significance of the work lay less in its immediate predictive superiority than in its conceptual displacement of the Earth from the center of the universe. The reception of heliocentrism was gradual and contested.
