Among historians of science, there is broad consensus that a distinctive and consequential transformation in European natural philosophy occurred between roughly the mid-sixteenth and early eighteenth centuries, associated with figures such as Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler, Descartes, and Newton. There is also broad consensus that the term "Scientific Revolution" - coined in its modern historiographical sense by Alexandre Koyré and popularized by Herbert Butterfield - is a useful, if imperfect, organizing concept for this transformation.

Beyond this descriptive core, consensus weakens substantially. Historians agree that the concept requires qualification: that it was neither sudden nor uniformly "revolutionary," that it was embedded in prior traditions including [[scholasticism-historiography-consensus|Scholastic natural philosophy]], that its geographic and cultural scope was not limited to a handful of heroic individuals, and that non-European contributions shaped its conditions of possibility. There is, however, no consensus on how severely these qualifications should modify or replace the concept itself. The following questions are not settled by existing consensus:

  * **Periodization:** Whether 1543 (Copernicus) or 1620 (Bacon) or some other marker best opens the period; whether Newton closes it or extends into an "eighteenth-century" science; whether periodization itself misrepresents a more diffuse transformation.
  * **Whether the concept should be retained:** A minority of historians argue the term is so laden with Whiggish, Eurocentric, and internalist assumptions that it should be retired.
