**Organized crime** refers to structured, ongoing criminal enterprises conducted by groups operating under a defined hierarchy or network, with the primary aim of generating profit through illegal activity. These enterprises are distinguished from individual or opportunistic criminality by their continuity, internal discipline, use of violence or its threat to enforce order, and deliberate corruption of public officials and institutions. The term encompasses a wide range of criminal organizations - including mafias, triads, cartels, gangs, and syndicated networks - operating across national and transnational scales. Organized crime is a subject of study in criminology, economics, sociology, and political science, and its governance implications are debated across legal, policy, and philosophical lines.

Criminal organizations have existed in various forms throughout recorded history, but the modern concept of organized crime as a policy and law enforcement category developed primarily in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Each has distinct organizational structures, cultural origins, territorial bases, and operational methods.
