Michelson-Morley Experiment
The Michelson-Morley experiment was a scientific investigation conducted in 1887 by Albert A. Michelson and Edward W. Morley at what is now Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. The experiment was designed to detect the relative motion of Earth through the luminiferous aether - a hypothetical medium then widely assumed to permeate space and serve as the medium through which light waves propagate. Using a precision interferometer of Michelson's design, the experiment measured whether the speed of light differed along paths parallel and perpendicular to Earth's motion through the aether. The result was a near-null finding - effectively zero within experimental error: no significant difference in light speed was detected regardless of orientation, a result inconsistent with the aether hypothesis as it stood.

Background
The aether hypothesis was rooted in the analogy between light waves and mechanical waves, which require a physical medium for propagation. By the late nineteenth century, James Clerk Maxwell's equations had established that light was an electromagnetic wave, but the question of what medium carried it remained open and contested. Physicists expected that Earth's orbital motion - approximately 30 kilometers per second relative to the Sun - would produce a detectable "aether wind" effect on light-travel times along different axes. Michelson had attempted a less precise version of the experiment in 1881; the 1887 iteration with Morley used a vastly improved interferometer floated on mercury to dampen vibration, and is the version considered definitive.

The Apparatus and Method
The Michelson interferometer split a beam of light into two perpendicular paths, reflected each off mirrors, and recombined them. If light traveled at different speeds in different directions due to aether wind, the recombined beams would show a measurable interference fringe shift as the apparatus was rotated. The 1887 apparatus had an effective path length of approximately 11 meters achieved through multiple reflections, giving it sensitivity sufficient to detect a fringe shift of roughly 0.4 if the aether hypothesis were correct. The observed shift was at most 0.02 - within the margin of experimental error.

Interpretation and Significance
The null result did not immediately overturn the aether hypothesis. Several explanations were proposed in its aftermath, including Hendrik Lorentz and George FitzGerald's independent proposal that matter contracts in the direction of motion through the aether - the Lorentz-FitzGerald contraction - which would mask any fringe shift. It was not until Albert Einstein's 1905 paper on special relativity, which abandoned the aether concept entirely and postulated the constancy of the speed of light in all inertial frames, that the null result found its most influential theoretical home. Einstein later gave varying accounts of how much the Michelson-Morley result directly influenced his thinking, and historians of science have debated the degree to which it served as a genuine empirical prompt versus a post-hoc confirmation. A full account of the experiment's reception and influence is covered in the History page.

The experiment is widely cited in physics pedagogy as a foundational episode in the development of modern physics, though some historians of science caution against oversimplified "crucial experiment" narratives. Whether it was a decisive refutation of the aether or merely one data point among many remains a subject of historiographic discussion. ===== Consensus Status =====

There is broad consensus in physics that the speed of light is constant in all inertial reference frames and that no luminiferous aether exists as originally conceived. This consensus is codified in special relativity and supported by over a century of experimental confirmation. See the Physics Consensus page. The consensus does not foreclose historical and philosophical questions about the experiment's role in establishing that framework.

Viewpoints
 * **Standard relativistic interpretation** - The null result is best explained by special relativity's postulate of light-speed constancy, rendering the aether superfluous. Viewpoint page.
 * **Aether survivalist interpretations** - Some physicists and philosophers of science have argued that modified aether theories (e.g., Lorentz aether theory) remain empirically equivalent to special relativity and should not be ruled out on experimental grounds alone. Viewpoint page.
 * **Historiographic minimalism** - Some historians argue the experiment's role in the birth of special relativity has been substantially overstated and that Einstein's path was primarily theoretical. Viewpoint page.
 * **Crucial experiment realism** - Others maintain the null result was a genuine empirical crisis that demanded theoretical resolution and directly shaped the trajectory of early twentieth-century physics. Viewpoint page.
