====== Lexington and Concord ======

The Battles of Lexington and Concord were the first armed engagements of the [[american-revolutionary-war]], fought on 19 April 1775 in Middlesex County, Province of Massachusetts Bay. The battles began when British regular troops, marching from Boston to seize colonial military supplies stored at Concord, encountered colonial militia at Lexington and, later that day, at Concord's North Bridge. The events of the day, including the opening exchange of fire at Lexington, are the subject of long-standing historical dispute regarding which side fired first and why; these disputes are treated in [[lexington-and-concord-history]] and in the viewpoints below.

===== Current State of Knowledge =====

Historians broadly agree on the day's basic chronology: British Lieutenant Colonel Francis Smith led roughly 700 to 800 regulars out of Boston on the night of 18-19 April 1775 toward Concord, acting on orders to seize or destroy colonial military stores. Colonial riders, including Paul Revere and William Dawes, alerted militia companies along the route. At Lexington Green, a confrontation between British advance troops under Major John Pitcairn and a smaller body of Lexington militia under Captain John Parker resulted in gunfire that killed several militiamen. The British column proceeded to Concord, where colonial militia and minutemen engaged regulars at the North Bridge, forcing a British withdrawal that became a fighting retreat back to Boston under sustained colonial fire.

Beyond this shared chronology, points of dispute remain, particularly the identity and intent of whoever fired the first shot at Lexington, the scale and organization of colonial preparation, and the broader question of whether the battles represented a spontaneous defensive response or a more deliberate provocation. These questions are addressed in [[lexington-and-concord-first-shot-debate]] and related pages.

===== Viewpoints =====

  * **Spontaneous defense viewpoint**: Holds that colonial militia at Lexington did not intend to initiate combat, that the first shot came from an unidentified source or from British troops, and that the battles represent a defensive response to British aggression. See [[lexington-and-concord-spontaneous-defense-viewpoint]].
  * **Mutual escalation viewpoint**: Holds that tensions and provocations on both sides made armed conflict at Lexington and Concord effectively inevitable by April 1775, with responsibility distributed rather than concentrated on one party. See [[lexington-and-concord-mutual-escalation-viewpoint]].
  * **British provocation viewpoint**: Emphasizes British military and political decisions-including orders to seize colonial arms and to arrest colonial leaders-as the proximate cause of the confrontation. See [[lexington-and-concord-british-provocation-viewpoint]].
  * **Colonial premeditation viewpoint**: Associated with some contemporary loyalist and later revisionist accounts, holds that colonial militia leadership anticipated and was prepared to provoke or exploit a clash for political effect. See [[lexington-and-concord-colonial-premeditation-viewpoint]].

===== Controversies =====

  * The identity of whoever fired the first shot at Lexington Green has been disputed since 1775, with conflicting eyewitness depositions taken by both colonial and British authorities shortly after the battle. See [[lexington-and-concord-first-shot-controversy]].
