====== Intolerable Acts ======

The **Intolerable Acts** (also called the **Coercive Acts**) were a series of five laws passed by the British Parliament in 1774 in response to the [[boston-tea-party]] of 16 December 1773. The acts-the Boston Port Act, the Massachusetts Government Act, the Administration of Justice Act, the Quartering Act, and the Quebec Act-were intended to reassert royal authority over the Province of Massachusetts Bay and to punish the colony for its destruction of taxed tea belonging to the East India Company. The name "Intolerable Acts" was applied by colonial critics and is not how Parliament referred to the legislation.
