Frederick Douglass and Black Nationalism
Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) was a formerly enslaved abolitionist, orator, and writer who became one of the most prominent African-American public figures of the 19th century. "Frederick Douglass and Black Nationalism" refers to the relationship between Douglass's political thought and black nationalism, an umbrella term for ideologies holding that black people in the United States constitute a distinct nation or people with interests best advanced through racial solidarity, self-organization, or separation from white American society. Douglass is most commonly characterized by historians as an integrationist and assimilationist who opposed black nationalist positions of his era, though a minority of scholars have argued that elements of his thought, particularly his appeals to racial solidarity and self-reliance, can be read as compatible with or anticipating later black nationalist currents. The terms "integrationist" and "black nationalist" are themselves contested categories; see black-nationalism-viewpoint and integrationism-viewpoint for fuller treatments.

Current State of Knowledge
The documentary record of Douglass's public statements is extensive, and the consensus among historians is that Douglass consistently and explicitly opposed the major black nationalist projects of his lifetime. He campaigned against the American Colonization Society and the African Civilization Society, both of which promoted emigration of black Americans to Africa, and he argued publicly against emigrationist leaders such as Martin Delany and Henry Highland Garnet. Douglass held that black Americans had no homeland but the United States, that their labor had earned them a claim to American soil, and that racial separatism-whether imposed by whites or chosen by blacks-served the interests of slavery's defenders. In his late-career speech "The Blessings of Liberty and Education" (1894), he criticized contemporary "race pride" and "race men" rhetoric directly, arguing that organizing politics around race rather than universal principles was self-defeating.

A smaller body of scholarship complicates this picture without overturning it. Some scholars note that Douglass's rhetoric of black self-reliance, racial uplift, and collective racial dignity-particularly in his earlier career and in his support for all-black regiments during the Civil War-shares structural features with later black nationalist thought, even though Douglass rejected the label and the separatist program associated with it. This has led to disagreement over how to categorize Douglass within the broader landscape of 19th-century black political thought; see frederick-douglass-history for his biography and the historical context of these debates.

Viewpoints
 * **Douglass as integrationist/assimilationist** - The dominant scholarly position, holding that Douglass consistently rejected black nationalism, advocated racial amalgamation and integration into a single American body politic, and viewed race-based political organizing as a tactical and moral error. See frederick-douglass-integrationist-viewpoint.
 * **Douglass as a qualified or proto-black nationalist** - A minority position arguing that Douglass's emphasis on racial solidarity, collective self-help, and black institution-building (e.g., his support for black newspapers, black troops, and black civic organizations) reflects nationalist commitments in practice, despite his explicit rejection of emigration and separatism. See frederick-douglass-black-nationalist-viewpoint.
 * **Douglass as classical liberal/civic republican** - A position emphasizing Douglass's grounding in natural rights, individual liberty, and the U.S. Constitution as the primary lens for his politics, treating his opposition to black nationalism as a direct consequence of his individualism rather than a separate stance. See frederick-douglass-classical-liberal-viewpoint.

Controversies
 * Disagreement over Douglass's legacy has produced documented disputes between integrationist and nationalist political traditions over which figure-Douglass or contemporaries such as Martin Delany-better represents authentic black political thought.
