====== Dominion of New England ======

The Dominion of New England (1686-1689) was a short-lived administrative consolidation of English colonies in northeastern North America under a single royal government, replacing the individual colonial charters of Massachusetts Bay, Plymouth, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey. Established by King James II, the Dominion was governed by an appointed royal governor without an elected assembly, marking a significant departure from the degree of self-governance the colonies had previously enjoyed. Whether the Dominion represented a rational modernization of colonial administration or an illegitimate assault on established rights remains a point of historiographical disagreement.

The Dominion emerged from English Crown concerns about colonial autonomy, trade regulation violations, and defense coordination following the disruptions of King Philip's War (1675-1676). The Massachusetts Bay Colony's charter had already been vacated in 1684 after the colony repeatedly defied the Navigation Acts and restricted the rights of non-Puritan residents. James II, seeking centralized control over colonial commerce and military affairs, authorized the Dominion by royal commission in 1686. Sir Edmund Andros was appointed governor-general and arrived in Boston in December 1686.

The principal facts of the Dominion's existence and collapse are not in serious dispute. Andros governed without a representative assembly, imposed new land tenure requirements, restricted town meetings, and enforced Anglican worship practices in Puritan meetinghouses. The Dominion collapsed in April 1689 following news of the Glorious Revolution in England; colonists rose against Andros, imprisoned him, and restored the prior colonial governments. Most colonies eventually received new or restored charters, though Massachusetts Bay received a modified royal charter in 1691 that incorporated Plymouth and required toleration of non-Congregationalist Protestants.

Historians disagree about several interpretive questions: how severe Andros's rule actually was in practice, whether colonial resistance was principled or self-interested, how directly the Dominion's collapse influenced the political culture leading to the American Revolution, and whether James II's consolidation model had any administrative merits obscured by its political failures.
