====== Augsburg Confession ======

The Augsburg Confession (Latin: //Confessio Augustana//) is a foundational doctrinal statement of Lutheran Christianity, presented on 25 June 1530 at the Diet of Augsburg before Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Drafted primarily by Philip Melanchthon - though shaped in close consultation with Martin Luther, who could not attend due to his imperial ban - the document sought to articulate the theological positions of the reforming party within the Western Church. It consists of twenty-eight articles: twenty-one affirming what its authors held to be the correct teaching on major doctrines, and seven identifying abuses they sought to correct. The Augsburg Confession remains one of the most significant documents of the Protestant Reformation and continues to serve as a confessional standard for Lutheran churches worldwide.

===== Background and Context =====

By 1530, the reform movement initiated by Luther's //Ninety-Five Theses// (1517) had produced significant fragmentation within the Holy Roman Empire. Charles V summoned the Diet of Augsburg in part to address the religious divisions threatening imperial unity, particularly as the Ottoman threat to the empire's eastern frontier made internal cohesion urgent. The Lutheran estates were invited to present their theological case, creating the occasion for the Confession. Melanchthon drafted the document with a deliberately conciliatory tone, emphasizing points of agreement with Catholic teaching and framing the Lutheran positions as correctives to accumulated abuses rather than wholesale rejection of the Western tradition. A separate group of reformers, associated with the cities of Strasbourg, Constance, Memmingen, and Lindau, submitted their own statement - the //Confessio Tetrapolitana// - primarily over disagreements about the Lord's Supper.

===== Text and Structure =====

The document is divided into two main parts. Articles I through XXI address doctrine, covering topics including the Trinity, original sin, justification by faith, the office of preaching, the sacraments, civil government, and eschatology. The central doctrinal claim - that sinners are justified before God by grace through faith, not by merit - is stated in Article IV and is generally considered the theological core of the document. Articles XXII through XXVIII address specific ecclesiastical practices contested at the time: communion in both kinds, clerical marriage, the Mass, confession, fasting and dietary regulations, monastic vows, and the authority of bishops.

===== Reception and Confessional Status =====

Catholic theologians at Augsburg, led by Johann Eck, produced a reply - the //Confutatio Pontificia// - rejecting substantial portions of the Confession. Melanchthon subsequently composed the //Apology of the Augsburg Confession// (1531), a more detailed defense of the document's positions. The Confession was incorporated into the //Book of Concord// (1580), the collected confessional documents of Lutheran orthodoxy, where it holds primary status alongside Luther's //Small Catechism// and //Large Catechism// and several other texts. Lutheran churches that subscribe to the //Book of Concord// regard the Augsburg Confession as a normative expression of their theological identity. Some Lutheran bodies treat it as a strict confessional standard; others hold it in a more historical or advisory capacity.

===== Points of Ongoing Discussion =====

The Confession's precise relationship to Catholic doctrine has been debated for centuries. In 1980, on the document's 450th anniversary, Catholic and Lutheran scholars involved in formal ecumenical dialogue produced assessments suggesting that some of the Confession's articles, particularly on justification, were compatible with Catholic teaching - a conclusion that remained contested within both traditions. The question of whether the Confession represents a break from or a reform within Catholic Christianity is addressed in viewpoint pages linked below. Melanchthon's dominant authorship has also prompted discussion about the document's relationship to Luther's own theology, since Melanchthon's formulations in some areas, particularly on the Lord's Supper and human will, diverged subtly from Luther's.

===== Consensus Status =====

There is broad historical and theological scholarly consensus on the basic facts of the document's authorship, date, structure, and role within Lutheranism. Interpretive questions - including its ecumenical implications and its precise relationship to Lutheran and Catholic orthodoxy - remain subjects of active theological debate and are addressed in linked pages.
