Adi Shankaracharya (Sanskrit: आदि शङ्कराचार्य; c. 700-750 CE, dates disputed) was an Indian philosopher, theologian, and religious reformer whose consolidation and systematization of Advaita Vedanta - the non-dualist school of Hindu philosophy - became one of the most influential intellectual achievements in South Asian religious history. He is credited with composing extensive commentaries on the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Brahma Sutras, and with establishing four monastic centers (mathas) across the Indian subcontinent that continue to function today. His title "Shankaracharya" combines his name with the Sanskrit term for a revered teacher (acharya); "Adi" (first, original) distinguishes him from later teachers who held the same title.

Shankaracharya was born in Kaladi, in what is now the state of Kerala, India. Traditional hagiographies place his dates in the 8th century CE, though some Hindu traditions assign him dates as early as 509-477 BCE. Modern scholarly consensus places him in the late 7th to mid-8th century CE, though this remains a subject of discussion. According to tradition, he became a sannyasi (renunciant) at a young age, traveled extensively throughout the subcontinent engaging in philosophical debate, and died young - accounts vary between 32 and 56 years of age.

He is said to have debated prominent thinkers of rival schools, including the Mimamsakas, the Buddhists, and the Vaishnavite philosopher Mandana Mishra. His travels retraced a significant portion of India, and the four mathas he founded - at Sringeri (south), Dwaraka (west), Puri (east), and Jyotirmath (north) - reflect a deliberate geographic structure. The philosophical system Shankaracharya consolidated, Advaita (non-dual) Vedanta, holds that the individual self (atman) and ultimate reality (Brahman) are not two distinct things but identical - the appearance of multiplicity and individuality is attributed to maya, a term variously translated as illusion, appearance, or the creative power of Brahman. His commentaries argued that the Upanishads, properly interpreted, teach this non-dual position, and he offered systematic responses to rival readings.

His most technically demanding work is generally considered to be his commentary on the Brahma Sutras (Brahmasutra-bhashya). He also authored independent texts including Vivekachudamani (Crest Jewel of Discrimination), though the attribution of some works to him directly rather than to his school remains a matter of scholarly discussion.

Shankaracharya's synthesis substantially shaped subsequent Hindu intellectual life. His framework for distinguishing levels of reality (vyavaharika, conventional; paramarthika, absolute) allowed him to accommodate devotional practice and ritual at a pragmatic level while maintaining metaphysical non-dualism. Later Vedanta schools, including Ramanuja's Vishishtadvaita and Madhva's Dvaita, developed in explicit dialogue with and opposition to his positions.

The four mathas he founded continue to appoint successors who also bear the title Shankaracharya and serve as religious authorities within their respective traditions.
