Abortion
Abortion refers to the termination of a pregnancy before the fetus reaches viability outside the womb, whether induced deliberately or occurring spontaneously. The term is most commonly used to describe induced abortion — a deliberate medical or surgical procedure to end a pregnancy — as distinct from miscarriage, which is spontaneous. What moral, legal, and political status abortion should have is among the most widely debated questions in contemporary public life; how the act itself should be defined and described is also contested across viewpoints. See abortion-viewpoint-pro-life-viewpoint, abortion-viewpoint-pro-choice-viewpoint, and related pages for positions on the underlying questions.

Current State of Debate
Abortion is practiced across the world under widely varying legal frameworks, ranging from near-total prohibition to access available on request through most of pregnancy. Medical methods of inducing abortion include pharmaceutical regimens (most commonly mifepristone combined with misoprostol) and surgical procedures; the available methods and their legal status vary by jurisdiction and gestational stage.

The biological course of fetal development — from fertilization through implantation, embryonic development, acquisition of cardiac activity, neurological development, and viability — is established in the biomedical literature, though the moral weight to be assigned to each stage is contested. Questions of when morally relevant personhood begins, what rights or interests a pregnant person holds, and how conflicts between those interests should be resolved are subjects of ongoing philosophical, theological, legal, and political debate. These questions are treated on dedicated pages rather than adjudicated here.

Legal access to abortion has shifted significantly in recent decades in numerous countries. In the United States, the Supreme Court's 1973 decision in //Roe v. Wade// established a constitutional right to abortion access, which was overturned in 2022 by //Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization//, returning regulatory authority to individual states. Legal and legislative activity on the question remains active in many jurisdictions. See abortion-controversy-dobbs-controversy and abortion-history for fuller treatment.

Consensus Status
There is broad agreement among medical and public health researchers that access to safe, legal abortion reduces maternal mortality and morbidity compared to access to unsafe clandestine procedures. This finding has been documented across multiple independent research institutions and international health bodies.((World Health Organization, //Safe Abortion: Technical and Policy Guidance for Health Systems//, 2nd ed. (Geneva: WHO, 2012); Raymond, Elizabeth G., and David A. Grimes. "The Comparative Safety of Legal Induced Abortion and Childbirth in the United States." //Obstetrics and Gynecology// 119, no. 2 (2012): 215–219.)) See abortion-medical-safety-consensus for a full account of the evidence base, its scope, and its limits.

No equivalent cross-institutional consensus exists on the moral, legal, or political questions that constitute the central public debate over abortion. Those questions are addressed on Viewpoint and Debate pages.

Viewpoints
A wide range of positions are held on abortion, distinguished principally by differing premises about personhood, bodily autonomy, the role of law, and the weight of competing interests. The following are representative:

 * **Pro-life (anti-abortion):** Holders of this view argue that human life or morally relevant personhood begins at or near fertilization, and that the deliberate termination of a pregnancy is therefore morally impermissible in most or all circumstances. Many ground this position in religious conviction; others argue for it on secular philosophical grounds. See abortion-religious-pro-life-viewpoint.

 * **Secular pro-life:** Holders of this view reach a pro-life conclusion through secular philosophical reasoning rather than religious or spiritual premises. Drawing on frameworks such as the argument from potential (that a human embryo or fetus possesses the intrinsic potential to develop into a being with full moral status), the continuity argument (that there is no non-arbitrary developmental threshold after fertilization at which moral status is acquired), or Don Marquis's future-like-ours argument (that abortion wrongly deprives a being of a valuable future comparable to the one that makes killing an adult person wrong), they hold that abortion is morally impermissible in most or all circumstances on purely naturalistic grounds. See abortion-secular-pro-life-viewpoint.

 * **Pro-choice:** Holders of this view argue that the decision to continue or terminate a pregnancy is a matter of personal autonomy properly belonging to the pregnant person, and that legal prohibition constitutes an unjustifiable restriction on bodily self-determination. See abortion-pro-choice-viewpoint.

 * **Moderate or incrementalist positions:** A range of positions hold that abortion should be legally available under some circumstances but restricted under others — for example, permitted in early pregnancy or in cases of rape, incest, or fetal abnormality, but restricted or prohibited at later gestational stages. See abortion-moderate-viewpoint.

 * **Religious permissibility:** Some religious traditions hold that abortion is not only legally permissible but can be morally required or sanctioned under certain circumstances, diverging from the positions of other religious communities on the same question. See abortion-religious-permissibility-viewpoint.

 * **Fetal sentience and late-term questions:** Some hold that moral status tracks the capacity for pain or conscious experience, placing the threshold for moral concern later in fetal development and distinguishing early from late abortion on those grounds. See abortion-fetal-sentience-viewpoint.

Controversies
 * The 2022 United States Supreme Court decision in //Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization//, which overturned //Roe v. Wade// and //Planned Parenthood v. Casey//, is the subject of ongoing legal, political, and constitutional dispute. See abortion-controversy-dobbs-controversy.

 * The legal, clinical, and ethical treatment of abortion in cases of medical emergency — including ectopic pregnancy and conditions threatening maternal life — has been the subject of documented disputes in multiple jurisdictions. See abortion-controversy-medical-emergency-controversy.

 * Conscience clause and institutional refusal policies, governing whether providers or institutions may decline to participate in abortion services, are the subject of active legal and policy dispute. See abortion-controversy-conscience-clause-controversy.
